Across the system, the 2019-2020 school year is well underway! The Leadership Team is delighted to welcome some returning faces and celebrate some new leadership assignments. Mr. Jon Iliffe and Mr. Wes Koch, long-time CIS teachers and leaders have new assignments this year. Having worked as the English Language Director at AES for the past two years, Mr. Jon joins Ms. Bonnie as the BCIS Vice Principal and Mr. Wes moves from BCIS to the position of AES English Language Director working with Mr. Ian. Mr. Dat is officially the Vietnamese AES Vice-Principal. Returning to CIS as the Elementary Vice-Principal is Mr. Mark Bell.


This year’s CISS Leadership Team represents a myriad of subject expertise in, the Arts, English language instruction, Maths and Sciences and post-graduate studies in Assessment and Evaluation, Educational Administration and Teaching and Learning, along with a wealth of practical experience in and beyond the classroom. Despite all this knowledge and expertise, we cannot realize all our goals without the partnership of our parents. Please be sure to keep in regular contact with our teachers, our Leadership Team and our ASOs. 


At the end of the 2018-2019 school year, we celebrated our graduates.  In July all of the AES and BCIS Grade 12 students successfully passed the Vietnamese National Examinations and were awarded their High School Graduation Diploma. At CIS each of the Grade 12 students studying the Ontario curriculum was awarded the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and 10 students completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Congratulations to our students, their families and our teachers on your commitment to teaching and learning!

Similarly, in June 2019, the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released the results of the 2019 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). In April 2019, 79 CIS students wrote this provincially mandated test; this is our largest number yet of CIS participants. Seventy-six (76) of those students successfully passed this test, a 96% pass rate. This is a notable achievement for English Language Learners (ELL). Since the successful completion of the OSSLT is a graduation requirement, CIS has strict admission policies for students studying the Ontario curriculum in its entirety in English. The CISS system continues to grow and this year we welcomed more than 50 new Canadian and International teachers. They are enjoying both the weather and the very warm welcome from Vietnamese staff and students! The focus across this system this year is on assessment and evaluation and the building of community. The founding principles of character education are extended to explicitly address the development of global competencies that will serve our students - your children - in an ever-changing world.
